Overview
The Actor’s Truth app aims to bridge this gap by breaking the exclusivity of traditional acting academies and providing a structured, accessible, and credible platform for learning. Backed by Saurabh Sachdeva a well known actor and respected acting coach with a network of established alumni, the app builds trust among new learners while making professional education more affordable and flexible.
By combining accessible learning with real industry guidance, it helps aspiring actors gain the knowledge, confidence, and direction they need to pursue their goals from anywhere in the country.
The Problem
For decades, Mumbai, India has been seen as the ultimate destination for anyone dreaming of an acting career. Along with other major cities, it has become the centre of the entertainment industry and the main hub for opportunities. However, for most aspiring actors, this world can feel distant and overwhelming. Many people enter the field without clear guidance on where to start, which classes to join, or who to approach for mentorship. The information is scattered, and opportunities are often limited to those who already have the right connections or resources.
As a result, many talented individuals struggle to find proper direction and eventually give up on their dreams. There was a need to bridge this gap by breaking the exclusivity of traditional acting academies and providing a structured, accessible, and credible platform for learning.
Design Approach
We adopted the STEP (Soak, Think, Execute, Proof) process, a framework divided into three distinct phases: UX Research, UX Design, and UI Design. From our research, we concluded that the core focus needed to be on four pillars: accessibility, affordable education, responsive design, and gamification with instant feedback. By grounding the design in these foundational principles, the app was shaped to seamlessly support the learner's journey.
To ensure an engaging and effective learning experience, the UI was designed with key features: The interface is engaging, incorporating pictogram interactions and gamification that significantly enhance usability. Features like quizzes and streaks give students a tangible sense of achievement, increasing user retention and making the platform a tool that enhances the learning delivery.
A crucial decision was made to maintain a consistent design language across all deliverables which is the mobile application, responsive website, and marketing website. This strategic consistency ensures the styling fully aligns with The Actor's Truth branding, which the client has already established through their social
media presence.
Visual Direction & Evolution
The visual direction for The Actor’s Truth evolved through an iterative exploration process. During the initial phase, two UI variations were presented to the client as part of the standard design approach. While they appreciated certain aspects of both, neither version fully captured their vision.
To refine the direction, a detailed color exploration phase was conducted. Multiple color combinations were tested to achieve the right balance of vibrancy and warmth. The process was guided by an analysis of the studio’s interior space, which the client had described as colorful and expressive. Drawing inspiration from the hues used in their studio and reflected across their social media posts, various color palettes were applied to the existing layout structure.
This exploration led to the selection of a final variation that felt authentic to their brand environment. The new palette, paired with a carefully chosen typeface, reflected the boldness and expressive energy of acting. The final composition achieved both visual depth and character, aligning perfectly with the essence of The Actor’s Truth.
Impact and Outcome
The app is live on Google Play with 5,000+ downloads and a 4.9 rating, showing a strong response from acting students.
The minimal and structured UI helped make acting education more approachable and organized for learners across India.
The project also received a Bronze Award for Best Innovation in UX by exchange4media, recognising its design and impact.
Contributions and Lessons Learnt
Consistency was key to this project, making sure the final product matched the brand on both the app and the website. But, keeping this consistency was a big challenge at first. This difficulty showed me how important a clear plan was.
The biggest lesson was the value of strong communication. I learned how a lack of clear, continuous team talks can directly hurt a project's final design quality.
Building a detailed design system became the vital core that made the whole project flow smoothly. To keep things efficient, I created and managed two separate, but connected, design systems: one for the app and one for the Marketing website.
This project marked my first opportunity to work as project owner. I was responsible for delegating and managing the entire process, which involved continuous communication and updates with the client and internal team, alignment across the UX and graphic design teams, and collaborating with other UI designers.
Serving as the project owner provided invaluable professional experience. This experience was key in building confidence in my decision-making and refining my ability to strategically plan and execute the project under a challenging deadline.
